Captain’s Cup:  Each year on Labor Day Weekend the Tangier Fleet conducts its Captains Cup Race on Sunday preceding the Deal Island / Chance Skipjack rendezvous and races.  For many years ESSA has supported this historical event sponsored by the Chance Lions Club by purchasing an advertisement in the program and conducting this race.  Donated by Lou-Elin and Deke Sheller, the trophy was first awarded in 1975.  The original was lost 10 years later so there is a replacement trophy.  Labor Day is the Deal Island Race in conjunction with the skipjack race. This year Dave Gooch took first place in the Captain’s Cup on “Puff Daddy.” There was no Deal Island/Chance Lion’s Club race this year.
Gosling:  The Gosling was a blow out with too much wind for a safe sail this year. Gordon's gathering afterward was a great success. A Special Thank you to Sue Gordon for once again providing delicious chili and venison bbq. Also, Deke Sheller for providing Dark & Stormys, always a hit. Everyone had a wonderful time, as usual.
Grey Goose:  Was also cancelled due to high winds.

Choptank Fleet
Stedman Smith Cup:  This race to Oxford and back commemorates the contributions of Dr. Smith to the Association.  It is a PHRF with a twist – Arrive by Noon at the Tred Avon Yacht Club for lunch, even if motoring required; a different skipper on the return leg.  This beautiful trophy was made from a trophy cup found in Dr. Smith’s basement after his death and  the wood base is from a piece of the mast from the skipjack “Susan May” which sailed the waters of the Chesapeake from 1940 to sometime in the 1990’s, this award was first given out in 2000.
This year’s winner was:    First Place:  Jambo – Trevor Carouge
Second Place:  Gabrielle – Branden Spear
                                          Third:  Jitterbug – George Breig

Wild Goose Chase: Originated by the now defunct Wild Goose Brewery in Cambridge in 1992. This is a reverse PHRF, with starting times determined by actual performance in the Wednesday night series, to the Choptank Light and return.  14.5 nm race, 11-minute time span for the three places at the finish.

First Place:  Ethel Alcohol– Dotty Holoubek
Second Place:  Aura – Bob Gallagher
Third Place:   Jambo – Trevor Carouge

Choptank Cup:  Premier and longest event of the season to Sharps Island Light and return.  The first attempt was cancelled due to no wind, the second try was shortened to the Choptank Cup and back due to very high winds.  1’ 18” time difference.  First place skipper is in the tropics with several other ESSA members so no formal presentation this year.

First Place:  Whistle Jacket – Trevor Carouge

Second Place:  Bold Spirit – Lee Beauchamp
