Status of this blog site

Since 2016, This blogsite has been the primary source for news, notices, and race results. Now that the ESSAsailing.org website has been rejuvenated. The need for this site is almost unnecessary. The documents on this site will be updated for 2024. All historic posts will remain in place.

Please note that, race results will not be published on this site in 2024.

Meeting and other notifications will not be posted in 2024.

Save the Date: ESSA 50th Anniversary Bash, June 29, 2024

 Get Ready to Rhumba!

 ESSA 50th Anniversary Bash Committee

Is in the process of collecting 1970 Sailing memorabilia from Regatta of the 70’s & 80’s .

What I’m looking for are old Regatta T-shirts , Trophies, photographs of sailors in the sailboats of the day.

We will gladly return them to the owner, or if you would, like we would be stewards  of their memory.

So now is the time to clean out your closets, basements, and dig out that sailing memorabilia from the past!

Goals for this year fall/winter

· Advertising flyers & posters to place on boats, local restaurants & schools

· More social activities, learning events with speakers – Pat Seidel has agreed to give talk about all the different rating systems

· Promote racing in CBYRA races and ask those racing to fly ESSA burgees

· Add/promote cruising class. Need rules & details for flyer

· Partner with CYC to hold CBYRA Race(s) and advertise our club

· Fall series on the Choptank Sunday afternoons?

· Additional thoughts?

·         Set General Meeting Agenda & Date – Still need to set date Friday November 10 or 17 or ??

 Old business,

· We need to send out some Telltales this year.

· Jerry Gerlitski may not be able to do the Yearbook this year. May need a backup.

· Need to think about nominations for special awards ie:

  • ·         Spirit of Sailing,
  • ·         ESSA Promotional,
  • ·         Bluewater Cup,
  • ·         Great Shoals Lighthouse Award,
  • ·         Cruising Award

· Finalizing Bylaws

· Discuss cruising class.

· Discuss membership requirements ie: we used to make people have a sponsor in the club, but we eliminated that in our last bylaws revision. Now, on the website anyone can join at any time and I'm not sure that is a great idea.

Notice of Race

The Wild Goose Chase Race will be conducted on September 9, 2023.  This is a Non-Spinnaker pursuit style race in which slower boats start first.  The race will begin near the Cambridge Yacht Club, continue towards the Choptank Light, and return to Cambridge.  The spirit of this race is to give those boats that never win a chance to be competitive.

Boats with higher handicaps will start first.  This year modified PHRF ratings will be used to determine the appropriate delays. The PHRF ratings will be tempered with actual performance records from the regular ESSA season. No boat will be delayed more than 60 minutes. The winner must pass all boats ahead.  The first boat across the finish line is the winner.

Starting times will be posted on http://essasailing.blogspot.com/ no later than September 7, 2023, at 1200.
