Is your boat secure?

Exceptional high tides are forecasted for our area. You probably already noticed the high tide today: The tides will be compounded with rain fall and south winds which keep the Chesapeake Bay from flowing out to sea.

Tides may rival the flooding caused by Hurricane Isabel which were the highest measured in recent years.

NOAA COASTAL FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EDT

SATURDAY...

* WHAT...2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level in low-

lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

* WHERE...Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties.

* WHEN...Until 6 PM EDT Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Severe flooding will cause extensive inundation and flooding of numerous roads and buildings resulting in a significant threat to property and life. Water will be 2 to 4 feet or more above ground level in some areas. Severe flooding will extend inland from the waterfront and shoreline flooding homes, businesses and isolating some neighborhoods. Numerous roads will be impassable under several feet of water and cars submerged. Some areas will need to be evacuated.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The highest water levels are expected with the high tide cycle Friday late afternoon through the evening. Time of high total tides are approximate to the nearest hour.

No doubt, all of you have been watching the weather forecast.

Ida will be visiting us this evening.  She is nasty.

It is an obvious and easy decision to cancel the race tonight.

Choptank Fleet, Wednsday Night Race, September 1, 2021

The remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to arrive in the Delmarva area on Wednesday and Thursday. As we know from experience weather forecasts can change to the better or worse.  Standby for updates. 

Jitterbug will be the committee boat, weather permitting.  

Due to the earlier sunset, The plan is to try to start the races 10 minutes earlier if possible.  That means that Spinnaker fleet warning will sound at 5:44 PM with a start at 5:50 PM.  The Non-Spin fleet's sequence will follow immediately after the spin fleet has cleared the line.

Trieste, Italy. (Sounds like the Choptank Cup.)

Olympic sailing crews, boating enthusiasts, and excitement-thirsty locals packed Trieste’s piers, old-world cafes, and vast square facing the sea.

Everything was in place.  Except for the wind. “Not a breath of it,” 

Last year, the 50th anniversary of the Barcelona, as the race is called, included 2,689 boats with 16,000 sailors, making it the largest regatta in the world by some counts.

A slight shift in the storm's direction could change things quickly.

The coastal areas, however, will experience high tides and strong winds.

Choptank Cup. October 21, 2018 Results

The brave and hardy crews of the ESSA fleet dared nature and King Neptune on their flight around the Choptank Light.  Heavy winds and white seas led to the decision to shorten the traditional route to Sharp's Island Lighthouse. The 20-35 knots winds from the NW produced sizable waves and considerable spray. In the end, the competitors finished within minutes of one another, Congratulations to Whistle Jacket on their victory over the raging Choptank. 

All returned safely, but, quite wet.

Choptank Cup POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21

There has been no change in the wind forecast for Sunday.

The Choptank Cup will be re-scheduled for Sunday, October 21, 2018.

A volunteer Committee Boat to officiate the start of the race is needed.

Weather: Current forecast predict pleasant weather for our Sunday race. The hurricane remnants should pass before the weekend. Light to moderate winds are forecasted for our race.

NOAA / NWS National Hurricane Center - Advisory #11

The National Hurricane Center has issued the following Advisory to include the Mid-Atlantic region.  At 5:00 a.m. today, Oct 9th, Hurricane Michael was a Cat  2 hurricane (winds of 96 – 110 mph) and was moving NNW toward the panhandle of Florida.  It is expected to be a  Cat 3 hurricane with sustained winds of at least 111 mph with gusts to 120 mph at time of landfall.  Michael is an extremely dangerous cyclonic system and will bring both heavy rainfall and winds in the affected areas.   

The cone of probability places the hurricane moving rapidly NNE toward the outer banks of North Carolina, late Wednesday, Oct 10th.  The cones center forecast places it over the Delmarva peninsula  Thursday morning, Oct 11^th.   The U.S. and European models appear to be in agreement with its expected path.  Winds and life-threatening storm surge may affect portions of the South Carolina coastline with tropical force winds between 65 – 73 mph.  The North Carolina and Virginia coastlines can also expect strong tropical force winds and heavy rainfall.  A Hurricane Warning and Storm Surge Advisory may be issued for the coastal sections of SC and NC .  The Mid-Atlantic region of VA and the Delmarva and estuaries may be affected by heavy rainfall and tropical force winds. The affected areas should begin to prepare for this event.  All boating interests should stay tuned to their local TV stations and NOAA Weather Radio for further updates.  Delmarva local interests should take necessary precautions to secure boats and remove any unsecured objects from becoming airborne.

SUMMARY:

Tropical force winds range between 39 - 73 mph and may include all coastal beach locations of  VA and MD.  Storm surge may affect coastal sections of SC / NC.    Flooding in these regions could take place.  These conditions will be accompanied by very heavy rainfall throughout the affected region of the warned areas.

Wednesday NIght Race CANCELLED! September 12, 2018

With regret, the last race of Series 3 and the last Wednesday race of the season has been cancelled.
After much discussion with the Bridge and the Race committee, it is felt that the high tide due at 7:07 PM will affect access to marinas and possibly cause some road blockages. Some skippers have already secured their boats for the high winds expected later in the week. 
Also, note that the committee boat will not be available.

CANCELLED! Wednesday After Race Event at the CYC, Sept 12, 2018

Due to the rising tides expected on Wednesday evening, There will be no after race cook-out at the Cambridge Yacht Club.  

A decision regarding the race will follow. Several have stated that they would prefer to use the time to prepare their vessels for high winds that are forecast.

NOAA / NWS National Hurricane Center - Advisory #44

The National Hurricane Center has issued the following  Advisory to include the Mid-Atlantic region.  At 5 a.m. today Hurricane Florence is 625 miles SE of Bermuda moving WNW at 9mph as a Cat 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 105 mph with higher gusts.  At the present time, Florence is scheduled to increase its forward speed and strengthen to a Cat 4 hurricane at the time of landfall (Cat 4 ranges from 131 - 155 mph sustained winds) with probably sustained winds of 140 mph, making it an extremely dangerous cyclonic system

with devastating results in the affected areas.   

The cone of probability places the hurricane, with a possible landfall between Wilmington and the outer banks of North Carolina with its southern side to include most of South Carolina.  Landfall could occur Wednesday evening, Sep 12th.  The cones northern side includes the entire Mid-Atlantic region and the Delmarva Peninsula.  Regardless of Florence's eventual track, large swells will begin to affect portions of the U.S. East Coast today, resulting in life-threatening surf and rip currents.  There is still uncertainty withFlorence's exact track.   However tropical force winds extend out up to 140 miles from its center with the Delmarva Peninsula within that sphere.

Tropical force winds range between 39 - 73 mph and may occur that would include all coastal beach locations as well as the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay beginning early Friday morning, Sep 14th.  Flooding in western sections of the Bay may also occur.  These conditions will be accompanied by very heavy rainfall throughout the Mid-Atlantic .  Rainfall amounts will range from 8" - 10" or more.  Preparations should begin now with the removal of outdoor furniture and other loose items that could become airborne. Boating interests in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Eastern Shore should take precautions to secure boats or move them to safe locations.  A State of Emergency has been declared in NC, SC, and VA.

Major flooding can be expected in the Washington - Baltimore metropolitan areas.  With the recent heavy rains, tree root systems will have been

weakened and vulnerable to falling, creating danger to power lines.   All

areas within the cone of probability should monitor their local TV and radio stations as well as NOAA Weather Radio for updates as they become available.
