Yes, we have some potential ties.

 Here's the rule directly from US Sailing:

A8 SERIES TIES

A8.1 If there is a series-score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores

shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference

the tie shall be broken in favor of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

A8.2 If a tie remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken.

These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Choptank Fleet NOR & SI Update

Sections 2.3 and 2.4 have been updated to conform with US Sailing Rules.  These changes will not affect any race results to date.

2.3 Safety Equipment - For all classes, the “Nearshore” category of the US Sailing Safety Equipment Requirements (available at

https://cdn.ussailing.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Monohull-SER-2022.0-Nearshore.pdf) will apply.

Previously, the PHRF of the Chesapeake specified racing safety requirements. They have discontinued that service.

2.4 Penalty Turns - Rule 44.1 (taking a penalty) is modified to allow a boat to take a one turn penalty versus a two-turn penalty when she has broken one or more rules of Part 2.  A penalty for breaking a rule of RRS Part 2 will be one complete one turn penalty. Specifically, after getting well clear of other boats and as soon after the incident as possible, a boat will make one turn in the same direction consisting of one tack and one gybe. The penalty turn will be completed within the current course leg.

The term "360" (degrees) has been removed as one jibe and tack can be completed in less than 360 degrees. E.g., from a beam reach she can fall-off into a jibe and then tack back to close-hauled in the original direction: almost 360.

 Rules Question???

Situation - The Race Committee has just announced that the course has been shortened. You are asked to finish to starboard of a mark in the next leg of the original course. The Committee boat will not be on station at that mark to call finishes. You are asked to determine when you have finished and call in your time. 

Question - Leaving the finishing mark to starboard, how close must you come to that mark before recording your finishing time?

Answer - In Rule 34 in the Racing Rules of Sailing, US Sailing prescribes “a boat shall finish as close to the remaining mark as practicable on a line extending from its required side at a 90° angle to the last leg. If a boat finishes when the Race Committee is absent, to be scored as finishing she shall note her finishing time and her finishing position in relation to any nearby boats and report them to the Race Committee as soon as possible.”

So practically speaking, to comply with Rule 34, mark your time and position versus other boats when you are:

1.  Approximately three boat lengths from the mark. 

2.  On the required side of the mark. 

3.  Sailing across a finishing line extending at a 90° angle between the finishing mark and the line of the last leg.

Scorekeeper's Notes: How are the codes used in scoring?

Here are some typical codes that we use from time to time.

DNF scoring: Did not Finish

The boat will be scored points equal to the number of finishers plus one.

DSQ scoring: Disqualified

Same as DNF

DNS Scoring: Reported to the starting area; but, Did not Start

The boat will be scored points equal to the number of starters plus one.

DNC Scoring: Boat did not report to the starting area and did not start

The boat will be scored points equal to the number of boats in series plus one.

For example: 

3 boats (A,B,C) finish the race in that order.

Boat D starts then retires. (ran out of beer)

Boat E failed to finish within the time limit. (wind fell off)

Boat F was disqualified (missed a mark.)

Boat G reported to the starting area but retired before the start. (forgot beer)

Boat H & I were absent. (on vacation in Hawaii)

A note regarding the Choptank NORSI

In an effort to keep all skippers and crew informed, please note the following.
It is possible that weather may affect the third series. Below are excerpts from our NORSI. (Last year, we had 17 completed races.)

2.7 
Three boats in a class must sail to make a race. Races with fewer than three boats will not be scored. Four races are required to constitute a Series. There will be one discard in each Series. A boat serving as stationary committee boat will receive the average points of the others counted races in that series.

2.8 
Awards will be given for total points for each Class in each Series and total points for the season. The number of Series Award Plaques given is based on the number of boats competing in the Class (Spin or Non-Spin.) 3, 4 boats - first place only; 5, 6 boats - first and second; 7 or more boats - first, second, third.
Overall Season Awards for each class will be based on all races sailed in the three Series minus a competitor’s three worst scores. To qualify for an award a boat must race in 50% of the races sailed plus one.

 Please note the following changes to the NOR & SI

1. Lightning rule: The RC will decide if the race is to be canceled.
2. The fleet radio channel is now 72! not 67.

Other changes for this week.

1. The spinnaker fleet will start first at approximately 6:00 PM
2. The Non-Spinnaker fleet will start afterward with a full six-minute starting sequence.

• In review, either class does not have a single boat that dominates each week. 
• Non-spinnaker: Although Reveille took honors in Series 1, the challengers rose to the occasion in Series 2.  Tamarind, Touche, and Slice all had first-place finishes. Tamarind ultimately endured taking Series 2 with no less than a second-place over the five completed races. Six more races to go. The overall championship is definitely up for grabs.

• Revielle = 15 points
• Tamarind = 19 points
• Touche  = 24 points
• Slice = 33 points

• Spinnaker: Nothing Artifical took Series 1 with 4 first-place finishes. Flossie stayed close with one first place and four-second place finishes. Epicure took one first-place beating Nothing Artifical by one second in race 3. 
• Series 2 gave the Melges 24's an opportunity to rise to the top. Bellatrix and Joker each took a first place. The J-29's defended their breed with Nothing Artifical in first place and Flossie in second for Series 2  Joker placed third.
• Series 1 & 2 totals: leader board
• Nothing Artificial = 12 points 
• Flossie = 18.5 points
• Epicure = 36 points
