Leg 1, The Race to Oxford

In lieu of a Skippers Meeting, race instructions will be announced on VHF channel 72.  Boats should assemble near G1 and G3(ESSA A)  for the starting sequence.

Skippers will need to  submit a completed  2024 ESSA Race Application if you have not already done so.  There will be only one class, Non-Spinnaker ORR-EZ.  Each skipper will record, and report elapsed time for both legs. Racers should monitor VHF Channel 72 at the start and during the race.

The race will begin at 09:00 unless delayed due to the weather.  The backup race day is Sunday, June 2 starting with a radio Skippers meeting at 8:30 am.

Stedman Smith Cup, Saturday, June 3, 2023

The annual race to crab cakes at the Tred Avon Yacht Club was outstanding.

The downwind start was orchestrated by Ron Freund and his RC crew on Red Sky. A relatively strong ebb current pushed the fleet across the line. Dudley Do Right, skippered by Dave Buchanan, was unlucky as DD was caught in the drift pushing DD over-early. The fleet lingered for an hour just trying to get to G23 and to Howe Point. It looked like a "never get there" trip to Oxford.  Gradually, the wind increased to 15 knots. The J boats zoomed to Oxford with Aura crossing the line first.

There was no problem getting everybody to the red buoy before the 12 noon dead line. Jitterbug was the only boat that required to employ the motoring rule. It required 4 minutes of motoring to get to the finish line at 11:59:23, a close call.

The fleet enjoyed a great lunch at the TAYC. Then it was time to sail back to Cambridge. Just getting off  the dock was a challenging as the east wind was up to 15-25 Knots. The start was on time, 14:00:21. The fleet sailed to the ugly spider Choptank Light. The skippers retired to there hot-healing cabins and the crews took over. Close-hauled all the way nearing hull-speed, some reefing was in order. The day was in great contrast to previous Stedman Cups when Leg 2 was abandoned due to lack-of-wind.

What was impressive was the number of people who turned-out to crew, several boats had five or six sailors for this Non-Spin event. The fleet filed the Tred Avon Yacht Club dining room. About 35 competitors in all. Crab cakes will do that. All will have great memories of the event.

Many thanks to all that made this a great event. Joe Brooks, Choptank Fleet Captain, deserves special recognition in arranging the luncheon and registering the boats. Ron Freund and his crew on Red Sky have been consistent in their support as Committee Boat.

Last year Champion: Gabrielle skipped by Branden Spear.

Stedman Smith Cup, Saturday, June 4, 2022

ESSA Racers,

Please plan to race the Stedman Smith Cup Race on Saturday, June 4.  This is always a fun race and I hope that you can join us.

We will resume the tradition of docking at TAYC for lunch. They will have three good lunch options to choose from.  Unfortunately, crab cakes is not one of them due to the very high cost of crab - too bad. The chef at TAYC has promised to put crab cakes back on the menu if the price comes down.

The NORSI for the Stedman Smith Cup has been posted on the ESSA Blog. Among other key race information, is the lunch menu.

So, line up your crew and importantly decide who will race your boat home to Cambridge when you hand over the helm after passing the Choptank Light.

Please let me know by Wednesday June 1 if you’ll be racing and what are your selections for lunch.

See you in the water!

2021 Stedman Smith Results

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Hello,

This requests your thoughts to help better understand the factors behind the low turnout for the Stedman Smith Cup race on Saturday, June 5th.

As background, the Stedman Smith Cup typically attracts 7-8 boats and 25 - 30 people for lunch at the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

This year 5 boats signed up for the race but only 3 boats showed up on the starting line. Even at 5 boats, the projected number of lunches to be served at TAYC was below what could justify opening their Clubhouse and bringing in staff.

The course was then modified to eliminate a lunch stop at TAYC and simply was a race to the Choptank Light and back to Cambridge. Even though a good racing breeze was forecasted, the modified course was eventually shortened due to low wind and Lazy Ethyl recorded the fastest time.

So why the low turnout?  To be direct, why did you not participate?  I will not associate your name with your feedback.

To get you thinking, here are some starters.

1. I am busy on Saturdays.

2. Lunch was too expensive at about $25/person.

3. The race over and back plus lunch takes too long. I can’t devote my weekend morning and afternoon to it.

4. I could not find crew with someone capable of sailing my boat from the Choptank Light back to Cambridge.

5. I don’t like distance races. The buoy race format on Wednesdays is enough

6. I was worried about potential Covid exposure.

7.  Your reasons.

Looking ahead, how should the 2022 Stedman Smith Cup be redesigned (or not) to encourage a higher number of boats to participate?

Please send my your comments at rgallagher1.rg@gmail.com

Thanks,

Bob

Stedman Smith Cup, Choptank River, June 5, 3 2021

The Stedman Smith Cup was modified and shortened due to low participation and light winds. The modified course was to round the Choptank Light and return to G3 rather than sailing to the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

Three boats reported to the starting line:

Aura, Jitterbug, and Lazy Ethel.

The race started and continued with very light winds until 11:30 when a good sailing breeze came across the river. Lazy Ethel was the first to experience a fresh lift propelling her to the shorten finish line at R18A. Aura at a disadvantage finished one minute later despite leading for much of the doldrumed race. Congratulations to Dottie Holoubek, Steve Adams and the crew of Lazy Ethel, 2021 Stedman Smith Cup winner.

SAVE THE DATE! Make ready for the Stedman Smith Cup. Saturday, June 5, 2021

ESSA Sailors,

Heads up!  The Stedman Smith Cup is three weeks from tomorrow!

As many of you know, this is a fun race that is broken into two parts. First, we’ll race from Cambridge to the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford where we’ll tie up and enjoy a crab cake lunch.

The second part of the race will start off at TAYC and round the Choptank Light to port. That’s when the skipper relinquishes the helm to a member of the crew who will race home to Cambridge.

Therefore, if you don’t have someone capable to driving the boat home to victory, now is the time to start recruiting.

A NORSI will be emailed to you and posted about a week before the race.

The first leg to Oxford started with surprisingly good wind from the Northeast.  All boats made it to Oxford under sail. No stinking engines were required to get to the crab cakes on time.

The fleet left TAYC early; but, light winds made it impossible to continue.  By rule, the first leg determined the winner.

Leg 1 started at Red Nun 24 near Hambrooks Light and finished at Red Nun 2 at Tred Avon Yacht Club. (8.7 NM.) Engine time proved to be a significant factor. Whistle Jacket managed to finish 50 seconds before the deadline of 12:30 PM.

As usual the crab cakes were worth the slow boat ride.

Leg 2 was also shortened. After a trial start near Red 2, the fleet motored out to Choptank Light to find some light, but, workable wind. After conditions deteriorated, the course was shortened to end at 19A. (4.45 NM.) Four crews let their skippers nap for more than 2 hours to finish the race,. Two boats motored home.
