The updated Cambridge Harbor site plan is the result of the latest round of public comments. CWDI, owner of the Cambridge Harbor site and tasked with its development and management, issued a call for public comment on April 8, 2022.

In all, 561 people logged on to the survey, reviewed the information, illustrations and images provided about the site plan, and answered the survey questions.

CWDI ASKS FOR PUBLIC INPUT ON SAILWINDS DEVELOPMENT

 

          Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc.(CWDI) in partnership with BCTDesign Group, is launching an on-line survey asking for your ideas and opinions about the future of waterfront development at Sailwinds.  Your ideas will be considered by CWDI in the shaping of a development master plan which will guide development decisions over the next several years.

          The Cambridge Waterfront area subject to development planning extends from the Burton Fishing Bridge to Cambridge Creek and encompasses approximately 40 acres.  To assist your thinking about how this area should be developed, a background presentation and introduction to planning topics will precede the questionnaire.

The survey website is https://www.bctdesigngroup.com/cambridge. 

It can be accessed beginning December 10^th.  CWDI encourages you to go to the website and take advantage of the presentation information and complete the questionnaire on-line.  If you prefer a paper copy of the questionnaire, please contact Sandra Tripp-Jones, Executive Director, at sandra.trippjones@cwdimd.org or 805-453-4480.  She will send you a questionnaire with a stamped return envelope.  Your ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Dorchester restaurants still offering take-out, delivery; some have groceries, too While our non-essential retail operations are shut down completely for now for safety reasons, restaurants are still allowed to offer carry-out and/or delivery. Many of our Dorchester restaurants have pivoted quickly to do this. Some have changed up their menus to offer family-size meals, pizza kits, cocktails by the quart (yes, alcohol is temporarily allowed to be a carry-out/delivery item for those over 21). Some are even offering grocery items for your convenience. We've put together a list of which local restaurants are offering carry-out/delivery, plus their contact info. This list is constantly changing, so check back frequently or check the social media of the restaurant itself. Dorchester County COVID-19 Press Conference for Thursday, March 26, 2020

Cambridge, MD (March 24, 2020) – The Dorchester County Health Department and partnering agencies are holding a press conference on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. to share important updates regarding Coronavirus Disease 2019, or COVID-19. In an effort to provide useful information, Dorchester County residents are encouraged to submit questions in advance by emailing mdh.dorchestercovid-19@maryland.gov.

The Sequoia at Cambridge

The Sequoia was the Presidential yacht for presidents from Herbert Hoover to Jimmy Carter.

The Sequoia will be here for a few more days at Ruark Boat Works which is located near Maryland Avenue.  It will be transferred to a barge which will transport it to Maine for a multi-million dollar restoration.

Some facts: Kennedy spent his last birthday on the Sequoia. 

Nixon played "God Bless Ameria" all night on the piano while drinking scotch before he resigned.

Haul lines, hear maritime tales, join a pirate crew, bring a picnic or simply enjoy the sail.

• Start your weekend early with a 2.5 hour afternoon or evening sail on Friday, June 14 from 1-3:30 pm and 5-7:30 pm.
• Saturday sails run from 10am-12:30 pm and 5-7:30 pm.
• Sunday Pirate Sail is planned at 10 am - 12:30 pm. The ship’s crew dresses as pirates and colonial sailors, tells tales and leads a scavenger hunt, Costumes are welcome for guests! 
• Sunday afternoon cruise at 2pm.

Easiest description is to say we need volunteers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday when it is hard to find people who are not working. A couple of examples; passenger van drivers between Long Wharf and Great Marsh, controlling access to Long Wharf(no cars) and giving directions. Same outside Great Marsh.

The Richardson Museum with the support of the CYC and ESSA will be hosting the UGRR Freedom Regatta.

This event includes time at the Ruark Boat works on Friday with a sailing experience on Saturday for 15 local high school youth. The objective is to introduce the students to the marine trades and recreational sailing.

Four ESSA boats will be a participating in the sailing event which will include a friendly, but, competitive rounding of the marks, Wednesday Night Style, on the Choptank.  

Each boat will have four or three students and 3 regular sailors for the crew.  We need a few good sailors to help us fill the crew.

This from the Maryland State Highway Administration: The Cambridge Creek Bridge is open to traffic today. Work is has been completed.

We'd like to thank MDOT-SHA for taking care of the Cambridge Creek Drawbridge, but also for handling the repair in a timely and efficient manner. MDOT-SHA fully appreciated the impact this had on everyone's commute, and the City of Cambridge is very appreciative for the completion of this project almost four days ahead of schedule.

S.S. John W. Brown to Visit Cambridge

The S.S. John W. Brown, one of only two remaining and operational World War II liberty ships, will dock at the port of Cambridge near Governor’s Hall from August 4-12. The ship will arrive with a few hundred visitors from its day cruise, originating in Baltimore, and will remain open to the public the rest of the week from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

During the evening, the Calhoon Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) Training School, will host re-certification classes for marine engineers from across the East Coast. Its visit will coincide with the 39^th Annual Seafood Feast-I-Val, which will be held at Governor’s Hall on August 11 from 1-6 p.m.

“This is such an exciting opportunity to host a piece of living history here in Cambridge, work with one of the city’s showcase events to create a significant attraction for visitors, and to play a role in the continued development of marine engineers from around the country,” said Brandon Hesson, the Associate Director of Economic Development for the City of Cambridge.

The S.S. John W. Brown is maintained and operated in Baltimore by a corps of volunteers through Project Liberty Ship, which preserves the ship as an educational asset. The ship was originally one of 2,700 liberty ships manufactured as part of an emergency WWII shipbuilding program. After its tenure as an active cargo ship, the S.S. John W. Brown served as a maritime high school from 1946-1983. Now, it also acts as a venue for special events and weddings when it isn’t providing a regular slate of educational day cruises and docent-led tours.

Cambridge Creek Bridge Closure: March 5-18, 2018

From the Maryland Department of Transportation:

"The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close the MD 795 (Maryland Avenue) bridge over Cambridge Creek to vehicle traffic from Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 18. Crews from Covington Machine and Welding will replace a gear in the operating mechanism and repair a damaged steel plate on the bridge deck. Marine traffic should be unaffected as the bridge will be locked in the upright position for most of this work.
As you know, this 80-year old drawbridge is a vital link for Cambridge businesses and residents, carrying more than 12,000 vehicles each day and serving our maritime community with more than 8,000 openings each year. It’s the second busiest movable span on our state highway system. While we strive to minimize closures through a rigorous maintenance schedule, repairs such as these are occasionally needed to ensure continued bridge operation and motorist safety. MDOT SHA is performing this work now to minimize public impacts during Cambridge’s busy spring/summer months. Detour signs will be posted; motorists and pedestrians will be directed to Cedar Street during the closure."
