The Choptank Cup is a long-standing event that tests the endurance of Skippers and Crews.

The race is a non-spinnaker race from Cambridge Creek to the Sharps Island Lighthouse and back to Cambridge Creek.  The traditional and full course length is approximately 33.2 Nautical Miles.

All boats will be scored Racing Class - Spinnaker or Non Spinnaker using ORR-EZ.

The starting horn sequence will begin at approximately 9:24 AM on Saturday, October 12th, 2024.

The race will begin at 9:30 AM (unless changed by the Race committee.)

Choptank Cup Results, October 14, 2023

Starting with light wind on a downwind start, it was uncertain that the fleet could reach Sharp's Island Light in time. As the wind increased, the rain became more intense saturating all crews. Strong but manageable gusts faced the boats on the approach and return from the Lighthouse. All boats made the turn. As the wind shifted to the east, it became necessary to tack back to Cambridge.  A wet and windy day.

Congratulations to the. Branden Spear and the crew of Gabrielle, the winners of the 2023 Choptank Cup.

2022 ESSA CHOPTANK CUP - NORSI

Saturday, October 8th, 2022 (bad weather date, Sunday, Oct 9)

 OVERNING RULES

The racing rules and regulations of US Sailing shall govern except as modified by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, the ESSA 20-21 Yearbook and these Race Instructions. As always the most important rule is to avoid collisions. Sail at your own risk.

PARTICIPATION

Any ESSA member who has paid their annual racing fee and is sailing a boat that has received a rating from ESSA or a valid PHRF Certificate of the Chesapeake may enter the race. All boats must check in with the Race Committee or designate boat using VHF Channel 72 least 5 minutes before the starting sequence.  Boats not acknowledged by the Race Committee Boat within the time frame will be scored DNS.

TIME KEEPING

When a Race Committee boat or land crew is available, they will handle starting the race as per normal operating procedures for ESSA Wednesday nights. If a Race Committee boat or land crew is not available a designated competitor (typically the fleet captain) can carry Ollie along and broadcast the start sequence via VHF Channel 72. All participants must individually record their GPS finish time and report it by email (essasailing38@gmail.com), or text 443-521-9920 to the Choptank Fleet Scorekeeper George Breig by 8pm the day of the race. The time of day should be reported: hour, minute, and seconds.

Example: 3: 22: 35 PM. Use GPS time or cell phone time with seconds please.

SKIPPERS’ MEETING

A skippers’ meeting will be held at the CYC Gazebo at 8:30 am. Any final notices before the race will be made on Channel 72.  Channel 72 will be monitored after the race begins.

START LINE

The starting line will be between ESSA “A” aka “G3" and “G1” buoys.

FINISH LINE & SHORTENED COURSE

The finish line will be the same as the starting line unless there is need for a shortened course. In the case of a shortened course, the finish line is where a boat passes abeam of the new finish mark within six boat lengths on the heading between the last two marks, and on the channel side.

If conditions change drastically after the race begins, the course may be shortened to a designated race mark. The course can be shortened by finishing at a course mark or by turning around at a designated mark and finishing at “G1- G3”. A race will be shortened and announced via VHF 72 prior to the start if at all possible. Always finish on the channel side of the mark.

STARTING SIGNALS

The race will start promptly at 9:30 am GPS time.

DELAYED STARTS, RACE ABANDONMENT, TIME LIMIT

Any postponement will be announced at the Skippers’ Meeting or prior to the starting sequence. Three boats must start to qualify the race.  Boats are expected not to retire the race shortly after the start just to achieve the three-boat minimum for a race.

TIME LIMIT

The first boat must finish the course by 5:00 pm or the race is abandoned. All boats finishing after 6:00 pm will be scored DNF.

CLASSES / EQUIPMENT

There will be a Spin and Non-Spin class as long as there are at least 3 boats racing in each class. If there are not enough entries for two classes then all boats will race non-spin (unless all participants are spinnaker boats).

COMMUNICATION

There will be no radio communications unless an emergency exists, the race is being abandoned or shortened, a boat is abandoning the race, reporting of bad weather or the Race Committee Boat is conveying important information to the racing fleet. The Race Committee Boat shall monitor Channel 72 during the race for emergencies or other imperative messages.

PROTESTS

Any yacht protesting another yacht must follow US Sailing Rules with the following provisions and exceptions:

1) Any yacht may exonerate herself for the infraction of a Rule in Part 2 of “The Racing Rules of Sailing” by getting clear of other boats as soon as possible & promptly completing one turn including one tack and one gybe in the same direction.

2) Notify the Race Committee or designate promptly within one hour of the Race Committee boat or designate docking. Protestor should provide a written protest on a standard protest form to the Committee Boat as soon as possible. Protesting vessels must call the Race Committee on VHF Channel 72 to report the protest.

SCORING

All scoring will be on corrected time utilizing the PHRF (TOT) Time-Over-Time method with a low point scoring system (first place = 1 point etc.) DNF will be scored number of boats started plus 1. Yachts will be scored according to the PHRF/ESSA handicap rating system.

The recipient of the Choptank Cup will be determined by the fastest performance in class on corrected time in the following fashion. The time of each class winner will be compared to the average time of the 2nd and 3rd place boats in that class. The class winner with the greatest time differential over the class average will receive the Choptank Cup.

ALTERNATE COURSE OPTIONS - The Race Committee may choose to shorten the course in response to conditions at the start of the race or any time during the race.  A change to the course will be announced on VHF Channel 72.

Choptank Cup, Message from the Fleet Captain

 Skippers,

As you prepare for tomorrow’s race, the note below stresses several requirements in 2021 Choptank Cup NORSI. 

1.  PRINT OUT THE NORSI ON THE  BLOG TODAY TO ASSURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT MARKS.

2.  We will NOT have a skippers meeting. If pre-race guidance is needed, I will announce it prior to the starting sequence on VHF 72. 

3.  All boats will sail Non-Spin. 

4.  We will not have a dedicated Race Committee boat to set the starting line. I (Aura) will be the on-the-water Race Committee. Announcements will be made on VHF 72. Please contact me during the race if you choose to retire, have a medical issue on board, need assistance, etc. 

5.  I will announce before or during the race if the course is being shortened. Specifics about the shortened course will announced on VHF 72. Skippers will be asked to confirm that they are aware of and understand the shortened course. 

6.  As mentioned in the NORSI, the starting line will be between G3 (ESSA Mark A) and G1. The starting line will also be the finish line. 

7.  The 6 beep warning horn will sound at 9:24 am. The 5 minute sequence will start at 9:25am. The race starts at 9:30 am. If you are over early, circle back and restart. 

8.  Skippers are expected to keep their own time and report it to George Breig after finishing the race. 

TIME OF DAY: HH:MM:SS  

TCF formula would look like the following:  480 is used for heavy air.

TCF = 650 / (480 + PHRF) 

Corrected time = TCF x Elapsed Time

PHRF CR Non Spin ratings will be applied.

9.   Please study the course marks since some marks have been moved, renamed or eliminated. Of note - G9 near Black walnut Point has been moved to the location of G7 and the designation of G7 has been eliminated.

The granddaddy of races, 30 plus Nautical Miles, rounding Sharp's Island light. The course will be altered since Green Buoy 25 has been removed. The 2021 NORSI will clear up that issue.  This is a classic Non-Spin PHRF race. Tamarind skippered by Mark Mc is the defending champion.

This is the granddaddy of the Choptank Races.  

A 31.90 Nautical Mile round trip from Cambridge to Sharp's Island Light.  

The race will be scored using PHRF.  Standby for the NORSI.

Last year, 2020, the wet and windy weather did not deter Whistle Jacket and Gabrielle. 

They went the distance and came back with their saturated crews dripping with excitement.

Choptank Cup Postponed until Saturday October 19, 2019

The Choptank Cup Race has been postponed until Saturaday, October 19, 2019.
All participants should re-acquaint themselves with the NOR &SI.

The decision to postpone proved to be wise as the winds last Saturday were mostly less than 5 knots.
With any luck, maybe the winds will be 10 knots or better on October 19.
The fleet captain will decide if any adjustment to the course will be applied.

Choptank Cup 2019: Revised NOR & SI

Note that the scoring method has been re-defined.

Other changes may be introduced at the Skipper's Meeting before the Race.

Yachts will be scored according to the PHRF/ESSA handicap rating System. Recipient of the Choptank Cup will be determined by the best performance in class on corrected time in the following fashion. The time of each class winner will be compared to the average corrected time of the 2nd and 3rd place boats in that class. GOVERNING RULES

The racing rules and regulations of US Sailing shall govern except as modified by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, the ESSA 2018 Yearbook and these Race Instructions.  As always the most important rule is to AVOID COLLISIONS.

PARTICIPATION

Any member or non-member who has paid their $10.00 racing fee and is sailing a boat that has received a rating from ESSA or a valid PHRF certificate of the Chesapeake may enter a race.  All boats must check in with the Race Committee boat at least 5 minutes before the start of the race.  Boats not acknowledged by the Committee Boat within the time frame will be scored DNS.              

TIMEKEEPING

       Committee Boat will start the race and then retire due to other obligations.  All participants must individually record their GPS finish time and report it by email. (Or Text 443-521-9920) to the Choptank Fleet Scorekeeper George Breig (essasailing38@gmail.com) by Sunday, October 13, 2018. The time of day should be reported: hour, minute, and seconds. Example 3: 22: 35 PM. Use GPS time, please.

SKIPPERS’ MEETING

A skippers’ meeting will be held at the Cambridge Yacht Basin Gazebo at 08:30. The $10.00 race fee will be collected at that time.

Any final notices before the race will be made on Channel 72 which is not wattage limited. Channel 72 will be monitored after the race begins.

START LINE

Between the Race Committee boat and ESSA "I –G 25".

FINISH LINE & SHORTENED COURSE

The finish line will be abeam of, and within six boat lengths of, the starting course mark (e.g. ESSA “I – G-25) or in case of a shortened course when abeam of a course mark, listed below.  The course can be shortened by finishing at a course mark or by turning around at the mark and finishing at the starting line. The position of the lead boat will be used to decide if the course is to be shortened.

The finish line is where a boat passes abeam of the finish mark within six boat lengths on the heading between the last two marks.

Race will start promptly at 9:30 hours GPS time:

DELAYED STARTS, RACE ABANDONMENT,  TIME LIMIT

Barring special circumstances, three boats must enter before a race will be held.  Any postponement will be announced at the Skippers’ Meeting.

Time Limit –The first boat must finish by 17:00 hrs (5:00 pm).  All boats not finishing by 18:00 (6:00 pm) shall be scored DNF 

CLASSES / EQUIPMENT

There will be a Spin and Non-Spin class as long as there are at least 3 boats registered in each class. If there are not enough entries for two classes all boats will race non-spin.

COMMUNICATION

There will be no radio communications unless an emergency exists, the race is being abandoned, shortened or a boat is abandoning a race or other communication from the Acting Committee Boat.  The Acting Committee Boat shall monitor Channel 72 during the race for emergencies.  Telephone calls usually work better: Trevor Carouge (443) 786-1051 (or George Breig: (443)521-9920)

PROTESTS

      Any yacht protesting another yacht must follow US Sailing Rules with the following provisions and exceptions:

1)            Any yacht may exonerate herself for the infraction of a Rule in Part 2 of “The Racing Rules of Sailing” by getting clear of other boats as soon as possible & promptly completing one 360 degree turn including one tack and one jibe.

2)            Present a written protest on a standard protest form to the Acting Committee Boat within one hour after the Acting Committee Boat has docked. Protesting vessels must fly a red flag.

EQUIPMENT

All equipment for Race Category 6P as outlined by PHRF of the Chesapeake Bay is required, and failure to comply is basis for disqualification.  http://www.phrfchesbay.com/eastdscert.pdf

These are the minimum requirements recommended by PHRF of the Chesapeake, Inc., for short races in protected (rivers and creeks) waters.

Note: 

If the course must be shortened, it will be at one of the marks of the course, unless changed by the race committee.

SCORING

All scoring will be on corrected time utilizing the PHRF (TOT) Time-Over-Time method with a low point scoring system (first place = 1pnt etc.) DNF will be scored last place +1. 

Yachts will be scored according to the PHRF/ESSA handicap rating System. Recipient of the Choptank Cup will be determined by the best performance in class on corrected time in the following fashion. The time of each class winner will be compared to the average time of the 2nd and 3rd place boats in that class. The class winner with the greatest time differential over the class average will receive the Choptank Cup.
