New Rules: Fire Extinguishers

The big change is that fire extinguishers older than 12 years from the manufacture date are no longer considered good and serviceable and should be replaced with a newer fire extinguisher.

This includes both disposable (non-rechargeable) and rechargeable fire extinguishers.  And while you are checking your fire extinguishers, make sure they are properly pressurized, labeled for Marine use “Marine Type U.S.C.G.” and are of the specific type required for your vessel length.

2022 Race Calendar

ESSA Racers,

Looks like winter is finally behind us and we can start thinking ahead to splashing the boat and preparing to race!

Below is some key information to help you plan for the 2022 Sailing Season.

 2022 Choptank Fleet Race Schedule

Practice Race - May 4

Series 1 - May 11 - June 15

Series 2 - June 22 - July 27

Series 3 - August 3 - September 7

 Special Races

Stedman Smith Cup - June 4 (I have confirmed with TAYC)

Wild Goose Chase - September 17

Choptank Cup - October 8

 Race Committee

Pat Seidel has generously offered to be the PRO for our Wednesday Night Races. With Pat’s broad experience in race management, I’m expecting that our races will be very well run on the water from a dedicated Committee Boat and onshore with a Race Committee team at the dock as we cross the finish line at CYC.

Importantly ESSA racers will not be required to serve Race Committee duty.

 New Course List for 2022

We have sharpened the Course List for 2022 to focus on the “most raced” races and to react to the repositioning of two marks at the end of last season.  Also, this year the Race Committee can set a course that is not on the Course List to better fit the conditions at race time

The new course list, bearings & distances between marks, and a revised course map will be included in the 2022 NORSI.

 New Scoring Software

We will start using new software to simplify the reporting of race scores. We will continue to use PHRF ratings. Pat Seidel will take over from George Breig as scorekeeper.

2022 NORSI

The 2022 NORSI will be issued in mid April, well ahead of our first race of Series 1 on May, 11.

Spin Fleet Racers

Please send a copy of your 2022 PHRF rating certificate to me (rgallagher1.rg@gmail.com) before the first race in Series 1. You will not be scored unless I’ve received your certificate.

2022 Dues

Your 2022 ESSA Membership and Racing dues must be paid to race and be scored. Please pay your dues by the first race on May 11.

Need Crew?

Let me know if you need crew. My contact info is in the 2021 yearbook.

Get ready to Race!

Choptank River: Heart of Chespeake Country

The Choptank River is 73 miles long and the largest on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It is bordered by Talbot County on the north and Dorchester County on the south, and it wanders through Caroline County, past its county seat of Denton, to its source in Delaware. Captain John Smith explored it in 1608 and Harriett Tubman traversed its watershed 250 years later. It is the “Heart of Chesapeake Country” bolstered by the “Queen City of Cambridge.” This river has a lot of stories to tell.

Change of Watch Dinner: postponed

 ESSA,

Based on the number of RSVP's received and the current state of uncertainty in the world the Bridge has voted to postpone the Jan 22nd Change of Watch Dinner.  Tentative plans are to do the official ceremony as part of the February General Meeting scheduled for the end of February.  The formal transfer of authority from the 2021 Bridge to the 2022 Bridge will be effective on January 22nd 2022 at 12 Noon.

We appreciate everyone's understanding in this matter and look forward to seeing everyone latter this spring.  Till then, please stay warm and think of the days of sailing to come.

John W, Co-Commodore
