Race Committee Duty: A message from you Choptank Fleet Captains.

Greetings Choptank ESSA Fleet

For those of you that were unable to race last week, we missed you, but we were able to squeeze in two races. This was in an effort to have three races for the first series. I appreciate everyone making an effort, and appreciate your patience as we progress into a post-COVID universe. Aura absolutely murdered the fleet, and it was fun to see some spirited competition near the finish line between Ethel Alcohol and Reveille, congratulations to both of you for excellent racing! Touche’ gave everybody a run for their money on the first race with a solid 2nd – CONGRATS!

As advertised some time ago, we are going to have competitors act as committee boat representatives through the end of the year beginning 7/8. Below is the list that I drew from a hat. If you need/want to swap with someone, you must do so with copious notice, and make sure that I or Bob G. are notified well ahead of time.

As committee boat it will be your responsibility to make arrangements with the Fleet Captain to secure the race committee boat bag as well as the land crew bag. You should have at least two members of your crew available to record finishes on the CYC bulkhead. Please make sure that you have a working anchor and rode, air horn (in the event Ollie isn’t working) and a working VHF radio. A reminder that you will be scored even though you are serving as the committee boat. George has published details on this in the past. Remember… separate starts for spinnaker and non-spinnaker, and Ron Freund can always be bribed with dark rum and may be available to assist your boat!

In case you do not have my cell number, please do not hesitate to call me with any questions regarding. 443-786-1061.

How the committee boat is scored.  See the NORSI. 2.6.2

2.6.2 Race Committee Boat Scoring - The boat designated as the stationary Race Committee Boat will be scored OOD (Officer-Of-the-Day.) The boat will receive the average points of all scored races less any DNC's for that series.

Committee Boat Scoring:
The boat designated as the Committee Boat will be scored OOD (Officer of the day.The average points of all scored races less any DNC's for that series.

Example: a boat that finished 1,2,3, OOD, 4, DNC.  The DNC would be discarded. Scoring: 1+2+3+4=10.  10/4 = 2.5 = OOD.
For the race that the boat was the RC, the boat would be scored 2.5.

Case of using a borrowed boat for RC duty: The skipper of the designated committee boat must be on board to officiate the Race Committee. If the skipper of the designated RC boat decides to permit his crew to race his/her boat, that boat will not be scored on its finish time. It will be scored OOD.  The 2020 Choptank NORSI will provide more detail.
